More About the Event

Ms. Lauryn Noelle Hill (born May 26, 1975) is an American singer, songwriter and rapper, known for being a member of Fugees, and for her solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998), which won many awards and broke several sales records. Hill was raised primarily in South Orange, New Jersey, and started singing at an early age with her musically inclined family. Pras Michel, who went to the same high school as Hill’s brother,  approached Hill while she was still in middle school about starting a band, which Wyclef Jean, a friend of Pras’, quickly joined. After changing their name to the Fugees, they put out the albums Blunted on Reality (1994) and The Score (1996), which won a Grammy Award and sold six million copies in the United States. With her rapping and singing, and the Fugees’ African-American and Caribbean music influences, and Hill’s performance of the hit song “Killing Me Softly,” Hill and the Fugees became household names and seminal influences across the music industry and music culture around the world
